Following the approval of the province’s new responsible gaming policy, New Brunswick authorities have decided to accept proposals from private companies to build a casino in the area. The construction of the gaming complex is expected to start next year and finish by 2010.
Although the government will not provide financial aid for the casino’s development, it will receive half of its earnings and about $25 million from its construction. Authorities have said that they intend to choose the project that represents the best option from an economic point of view.
Besides allowing for a casino, the new responsible gaming policy also prohibits the operation of video lottery terminals in restaurants. This means that the machines will be eliminated from half of the sites where they are currently offered.
However, bars have been authorized by the policy to continue operating the video lottery terminals and even increase their number by submitting a request with the government. Currently, there are 2,650 machines available in the province.
